Great Song Farm is a diverse community farm managed using organic and biodynamic practices. We are located on Milan Hill Rd., just 10 minutes from the center of Red Hook and Rhinebeck. Our farm is on 90 acres, with 2.5 acres in vegetable cultivation, 50 acres of cedar and hardwood forest, wetlands, rolling green pastures for our cows, and chickens to roam and graze, and 25 thriving beehives. This is our 7th season offering CSA shares. Anthony Mecca and Sarah Hearn are the farmers and caretakers.
Our Farming Practices
Our growing methods regenerate and vitalize the soils we work, and the community that our farming impacts. We work to ensure the health of the entire farm and strive to realize its potential as self-sustaining, an eco-system unto itself, as well as in relationship to the greater community. Our management practices build vigorous, complex communities of plants, animals, minerals, insects, birds, and micro-organisms – without any chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or heavy reliance on fossil fuels.
Our Farm Vision
Community and relationships are the foundation of Great Song Farm. We strive to foster a healthy and vibrant community where people can form direct and meaningful connections to nature, agriculture, and each other, on a small diverse farm.
We work to balance the needs of eaters and farmers while providing the utmost care and attention to the soil, the plants, and the animals. We envision a just, accessible, and transparent food system that is economically viable and fulfilling for both farmers and their communities.
We endeavor to act as responsible and conscientious stewards of our common watershed, wild flora and fauna and other natural resources, which are vitally important to sustaining Mother Earth.
Meet the Farm Team!
Anthony Mecca grew up with a passion for food and a wish to help humanity and nature reconnect. He came to farming after collegiate experiences studying computer science and english literature/theory. Unsure of where he was heading, he ended up working on a small CSA and market farm on California's central coast. Since those meager beginnings, he has apprenticed and worked for a well established 330 member CSA in NJ, a draft powered 200 member CSA in western MA, and a Full Diet (provides vegetables, dairy products, meat, grains, beans, fats, etc) CSA in northern NY as well as numerous other farms and farmers. This is Anthony's 7th year at Great Song Farm. Caring for the earth and its inhabitants, feeding people well and a strong sense of community formed the backbone of these wholly fulfilling experiences and is what inspires him in this venture.
Sarah Hearn has various responsibilities around the farm including community involvement and helping out in the fields. She is studying to become a certified homeopath which is her current focus.
Larry and Betti Steel are our gracious chicken-caretakers, marketing managers, biodynamic-preparation-stirrers, greenhouse-seeders-and-waterers, and hosts, among many other things. They hope to provide a welcoming, nourishing and vibrant space to their community through partnering with us on this farming venture.
Aussie The Dog joined Anthony and Sarah at Great Song in August of 2013. She's learning to be a good shepherd and all around farm dog.
Farm Team Farewells
Sunny and Kate, a team of Suffolk Punch Draft Horses, did all of the heavy work in the garden and around the farm the first 6 years of Great Song Farm. They are now in North Carolina helping another young farmer and teamster get a CSA farm started.
